Workshops & Private Lessons with Allen Schmeltz

It is the goal of Allen Schmeltz to provide instruction for young people, teens and adults that allow them to become “real” on stage. It is not about how to act but how to stop “acting” and start “being.” This is accomplished through theatre character analysis, theatre games, improvisation, monologues, scene study and analysis, as well as building on the strengths of each student and developing new skills.


  • $40 per lesson. There is no charge for the first lesson
  • A 10% discount is available for two or more students from the same family or a student who is also taking a workshop.
  • Payment is accepted by cash or check at the time of the lesson.
  • Lessons are held at Sutter Street Theatre (717 Sutter Street) or at the Sutter Street Theatre Annex (710 Figueroa Street) in Historic Folsom.
  • Lessons are 45 minutes to an hour in length.
  • Semi-Private students will be paired with those of an equal ability, age and experience. We cannot guarantee a placement in Semi-Private Lessons.


For young people ages 10 – 17 years old, and conducted in cooperation with Sutter Street Theatre Academy in Historic Folsom. In the workshops, students learn the skills of acting and improvisation. Having fun while learning is a theme of the workshops.

  • Workshop Tuition: $80 per month. There is no charge for the first workshop session you attend.
  • A 10% discount is given to two or more students from the same family, or to any student who is taking both private lessons and workshops from Allen Schmeltz.
  • Maximum enrollment of 12 to 16 students in the workshops, depending on the workshop format.
  • Workshops are ongoing, and students may enroll at any time.
  • Include a periodic showcase performance of student’s progress.
  • Workshops are held at the Sutter Street Theatre (717 Sutter Street) or the Sutter Street Theatre Annex (710 Figueroa Street) in Historic Folsom.

Adult Acting and Scene Study

Instructor Bio: Dennis has been involved in Stage & Film in Sacramento & Los Angeles for over thirty years. Five years back, Sutter Street Theatre ignited a new love for musical theater within him. By day, he is the Program Director for DDSO-Employment Plus. This program, serving adults with intellectual delays, provides an array of employment training including Video Production.

Acting Techniques: Stage vs. Film

This class will explore the different acting techniques among stage, film, and television acting. Scenes will be selected from any medium, with an emphasis on how to adapt your techniques for each.

Bio: Ally Dietz is an Elly-nominated director and has been performing in theatrical productions for over ten years. She has also been a teaching assistant and intern at Sutter Street Theatre for the past four. After having been drawn to the stage at a young age and introduced to film in middle school, she soon realized that it wasn’t just theatre she loved, but the entire art of acting, whether on stage or on camera. Ally loves teaching both new and seasoned actors alike, and helping actors discover a technique that works for them. She has trained with Allen Schmeltz, Studio 24, UC San Diego, and Michelle Felten at Sacramento State University.

Visual Arts

Oil Painting with Mike Jimena

Oil Painting with Mike Jimena is taught in a self-paced studio setting. The class is ongoing and may be started at any time. 

Based on Mike Jimena’s award-winning technique, each student progresses, learns, and develops at his or her own pace.  Student work is included in periodic Art Shows and Receptions.

Fee: $100 for three 2-hour classes, including all supplies

Oil Painting Workshop for Home Schoolers

Instructor: Mike Jimena

This workshop is scheduled for home schoolers and comes with a higher concentration of one-on-one instruction to develop the skills and technique of the student.

Fee: $100 for three 2-hour classes, including all supplies.

The Award-Winning Sutter Street Theatre will again be presenting Summer Camps in the Visual and Performing Arts!

(Younger class starts with Visual Arts in the morning, and moves to Performing Arts in the afternoon. Older class begins with Performing Arts in the morning, and moves to Visual Arts in the afternoon.)

There will be a performance at 5:00pm on Friday, June 23rd in the Theatre with a Reception and Art Exhibit of the students’ work in the Annex immediately following.

Masters Musical Theatre Workshop

Students will be working on a production of Madagascar. At the end of the camp, they will be performing for three weekends on Saturdays and Sundays at 1pm (July 15th – July 30th).
