SYNOPSIS: A mysterious old woman lives in the misty mountains, making beautiful quilts for the poor. Meanwhile, the greedy king is desperate to find happiness, assuming it will come from one of the many presents he has demanded from his subjects. When the old woman refuses to give the king a quilt, she starts him on a journey of self-discovery that takes them both on a whimsical adventure.

● A complete list of any conflicts you have during the rehearsal schedule. *There can be no conflicts during tech week or performances.*
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:
The Quiltmaker (Female, 50 and older, soprano with numerous solos and duets): The person should be an accomplished singer and actor. The magic of the show rests a great deal on the Quiltmaker. This is a non-dancing role.
The King (Male, late teens to young adult, tenor or high baritone): This is a wonderful character role. The King has numerous solos and duets, and the person should be an experienced vocalist. However, even more important than strong vocal skills is the ability to portray the King with a great deal of fun and a range of emotions. This is a non-dancing role, but the person should be able to move easily and smoothly on stage.
The Old Man (Male, 35 to senior): This is a non-dancing role with only a few lyrics at the end of the show, but still must be able to carry a tune. Serves as the narrator of the story. The skills of a storyteller are a plus. This character is physically onstage throughout the entire show.
The Child (Male or Female, 7 to 12): This is a non-dancing role with only a few lyrics at the end of the show, but still must be able to carry a tune. Experience on stage is a plus. This character is physically on stage throughout the entire show so the actor should be able to be still for long periods of time.
The Bear (Male, teen to adult): The Bear has a scene of about 8 minutes. It may be cast as one of the chorus members, but I would prefer it to be an individual actor. The bear has one delightful solo. You should be a good vocalist with a baritone or bass range. Some dance experience is desirable but is not mandatory. Tall and stocky is a plus but we will consider any size if you meet the other requirements. This actor will also play the role of the King’s Aid in one other scene.
Chorus – Soprano, Alto, Bass, Tenor (2 males & 2 females, teen to adult): These four roles are a very important part of the play. They are the King’s ragtag soldiers in much of the show, but also play other roles throughout. They are the thread that keeps things moving. They are usually seen together. Dancing experience is a plus although dancing is minimal. Good vocal skills, particularly within a group, are necessary. We are looking for a wide diversity in physical appearance, size, and personalities in the final grouping.
