Matilda Jr.

July 31- August 22

Book by Dennis Kelly
Music and Lyrics by Tim Minchin

Rebellion is nigh in Matilda JR., a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the “revolting children” who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.

Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence… and special powers! She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly lovable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, Matilda JR. is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

Holiday In The Hills is Sutter Street Theatre’s love letter to the Holiday Season; It takes place in the late 1800’s (give or take a year or two) right here on Sutter Street where the residents of the town and surrounding areas have gotten together for a party to celebrate the season. A lot of research went into the people and places that preceded us in the late 1800’s, and everyone you see onstage was an actual resident or visitor to Folsom at that time of year. Seeing a performance of Holiday In The Hills will put you and your family in the holiday spirit or we’ll give your money back, guaranteed.

What folks are saying about Holiday in the Hills!
“…it [Holiday in the Hills] was everything we’ve always wanted in a Christmas themed production. The music, songs, stories, and most of all the people. Of course the idyllic location on Sutter Street with the festive lights and shops only added to the night.” -Matt J.

The Berenstain Bears on Stage

Book and Lyrics by  Stan and Jan Berenstain

Music by Elliot Lawrence and Jamie Broza

The “world’s foremost expert on the Berenstain Bears,” guitar-strumming Cowboy Joe, is the show’s stage director—introducing and commenting on the play’s five episodes which are based on five classic Berenstain Bears books. The Berenstain Bears’ New Baby: Small Bear is an only cub, and he is a little lonely. But, he is growing—he has outgrown his own little bed. And he is about to become a big brother! Papa Bear builds him a new, bigger bed as they talk about the coming birth of the new baby in the family. When Sister Bear arrives, Small Bear becomes Brother Bear and he finds, to his delight, that he won’t be lonely anymore. The Berenstain Bears and the Messy Room: All families have a messy room or two in the house. In the Berenstain Bears’ tree house, the cubs’ room is the messiest. Mama Bear decides it’s time for a major cleanup; comic conflict results, which is solved by Papa Bear’s neatness plan. The Berenstain Bears and the Double Dare: It’s hard to resist someone daring you to prove you’re not a chicken! Neighborhood bullies, Too Tall and his gang, put Brother on the spot by daring him to swipe one of Farmer Ben’s watermelons. Farmer Ben catches Brother in the act and gives him good advice about dealing with bad influences. The Berenstain Bears Tell the Truth: An impromptu game of soccer inside the Bears’ tree house results in one very broken lamp. Brother and Sister concoct a far-fetched story about a bird flying in the window and knocking the lamp over. Somehow, Papa and Mama Bear doubt this explanation. As the truth comes out, Brother and Sister learn that “no matter how you try, you can’t make truth out of a lie.” The Berenstain Bears Get Stage Fright: Sister Bear is selected to be the star of the Bear Country School production of Grizzlystiltskin. She is very nervous about her role and has trouble memorizing her lines. She practices and practices to get them right. Brother has no such problem—he is supremely confident. But on the night of the performance, Brother gets stage fright and forgets his lines while well-prepared Sister not only has her own part down pat but feeds Brother his lines as well.

Where: Sutter Street Theatre, 717 Sutter St, Folsom

Humpty Dumpty is Missing! or The Mysterious Case of the Fallen Egg

by Joseph Robinette

What to Bring: A resume and headshot if you have them.

Synopsis:
Humpty-Dumpty Is Missing! is an affectionate spoof of the private-eye thrillers of the 1940s and ’50s and an exciting, fun filled way to introduce young audiences to this classic genre. Sammy Scoop is a private investigator in the tradition of his grandfather, Samuel Shovel and his father, Sam Spade. Sammy faces the biggest challenge of his illustrious career with the sudden fall and disappearance of the jolly Humpty-Dumpty who apparently had no enemies. But Sammy and his sidekick, Alice from Dallas, soon come up with a list of suspects who had motive and, perhaps, opportunity. Mistress Mary, Rip Van Winkle, Henny-Penny, Peter Rabbit and his sisters, Rapunzel and the Handsome Prince (who, because he is a painter, prefers to be called the Artist Formerly Known As the Handsome Prince) are among the many suspects called onto the carpet. A last-minute surprise appearance by two of fairy tales most celebrated characters, Mother Goose and Mother Hubbard, finally help Sammy and Alice nab the culprit (the least likely suspect, of course—we’d never break tradition in that important area).

Evil Dead: The Musical

Book & Lyrics by George Reinblatt

Music by Frank Cipolla, Christopher Bond, Melissa Morris and George Reinblatt

Evil Dead The Musical takes all the elements of the cult classic films, The Evil DeadEvil Dead 2, and Army of Darkness and combines them for one of the craziest, funniest, and bloodiest theatrical experiences of all time.  Five college students go to an abandoned cabin in the woods, and accidentally unleash an evil force that turns them all into demons. It’s all up to Ash (a housewares employee, turned demon-killing hero), and his trusty chainsaw to save the day. Blood flies. Limbs are dismembered. Demons tell bad jokes… and all to music.  You don’t need to be a fan of Evil Dead to love this show. You don’t need to be a fan of horror to love this show. You don’t even need to be a fan of musicals to love this show. As long as you like having fun… this show is for you.  Plus it’s the only show with a “Splatter Zone” – a section of the audience that gets covered in fake blood.  And with this combination of blood, jokes, cheesy effects, and really awesome musical numbers, Evil Dead The Musical is unlike any live show you’ve ever seen.  JOIN US!!!!!

For mature audiences only.

You Can’t Take It With You

July 16th – August 1st
Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM
Sundays at 4:00 PM

By Moss Hart & George S. Kaufman

Grandpa Vanderhof and his wacky family, the Sycamores, have been happily living their zany lives in his house by Columbia University in New York for many years. This family (and their friends) are a madcap group of eccentrics, marching to the beat of their own drum, with pride and joy. Their hobbies include collecting snakes, building fireworks in the basement, playing darts, writing a myriad of plays that never get published with a typewriter that was delivered to the wrong address years ago, taking ballet lessons from a Russian dance teacher and much more. Things like stress, jobs and paying taxes to the government are for other people, not for them! You Can’t Take It With You is a madcap, idealistic comedy that reinforces the idea that you can only live life to the fullest by doing whatever makes you happy.
